Kiel knowledge quarters

Four knowledge quarters will be established in Kiel over the next few years: on the CAU campus, in Anscharpark, in Gaarden and at Schwentinemündung (mouth of the river Schwentine).

Seven teaching and science locations will be developed into attractive clusters and become more involved in public life. Links between science, industry and society form a key success factor for the competitive strength of universities, cities and regions – there are examples of this throughout the world.

CAU campus

Many of the buildings at Kiel University (CAU) date from the 1970s and are to be renovated, modernised or newly constructed by 2026. Spread across grounds at Bremerskamp, the campus on Westring and the area around Seeburg on Kiellinie, a modern interpretation of the convergence of science and society is to be established: the Science.City.

Anscharpark

Work on the new and converted buildings of the former naval hospital on the Anschar grounds is already well advanced. The aim is to create a new urban start-up quarter, knowledge quarter and living quarter in one. In terms of improving links between science and industry, the focus is on art and design, sustainability and innovation.

The transfer park of the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design plays an important role in this. In future, the art university is to incorporate more innovation and new working methods into traditional industries, too.

Gaarden

Kiel University's Faculty of Engineering in Gaarden is a centre for high technology and is one of the CAU's particularly successful faculties both nationally and internationally. Together with the Kiel University of Applied Sciences (FH Kiel) and GEOMAR, the CAU's Faculty of Engineering plans to help change the image of the Ostufer (east bank) and transform the city's Gaarden district into another knowledge quarter. The Faculty of Engineering is to be given a new research building; student accommodation and a first-class veloroute for bicycles are to be funded and expanded.

Schwentinemündung (mouth of the river Schwentine)

The campus of Kiel University of Applied Sciences and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research are to be made more attractive in future and brought up to the same level as the science locations on Kiel’s Westufer (west bank). On the GEOMAR grounds at Seefischmarkt, right next to the Zentrum für maritime Technologie und Seefischmarkt (ZTS, centre for maritime technology and sea fish market), a new extension building is being constructed for marine research.

In future, the central GEOMAR campus will house all the research units, which are currently still spread across the entire city. At the same time, great progress is being made on the development of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences and numerous cultural activities have begun on the campus.
