Learning Offers

What is more exciting than working with real researchers?

A wide range of offers from the scientific institutions complement and deepen the teaching at school. The offers range from laboratory experiments to workshops, simulation games and lectures for pupils, right through to junior studies. At the same time, there are initial contacts with the university. Whether in a class or individually, after school or during the holidays – everyone will find something of interest here.

Stiftung Kinder forschen Little Scientists Foundation

Children are curious and want to explore the world. They have a natural desire to research and experiment. The "Stiftung Kinder forschen" (Little Scientists Foundation) educational initiative aims to promote children’s development and inspire them to study MINT subjects.

In many kindergartens, there is a research area that the kindergarten teachers set up based on different areas of interest. Small experiments or observations of nature offer the children exciting learning experiences.

The educational institutions are supported by the nationwide initiative "Stiftung Kinder forschen" (Little Scientists Foundation), which is supported in Kiel by the IHK. This provides teachers with the opportunity to attend further training courses on MINT topics and to obtain materials. In addition, the educational institutions can be certified. The offer is aimed at kindergartens and primary schools.

School labs

Research-based learning in school labs provides a welcome addition to learning in the classroom and brings fresh impulses to everyday school life: ask own questions, independently search for solutions and discover the world of research.

Scientists customise the offers for the different age groups and are available as coaches. For those thirsty for knowledge, there are additional offers in the afternoon or during the holidays.

Currently, the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt (school pupil research workshop) offers school labs and workshops on scientific topics from many areas: natural sciences, art, language, history, religion and programming.

More information about the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt (German)

The Schülerforschungszentrum (SFZ, school pupil research centre) of the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt (school pupil research workshop) in the Botanical Garden of Kiel University (CAU) offers school pupils from the 4th grade onwards the opportunity to conduct research on their own projects alone or with friends in their free time.

To the SFZ programme (German)

The school pupil laboratory at Kiel University of Applied Sciences (FH Kiel) is an offer to the schools in the state for deepening the school curriculum and increasing its practical relevance, which is primarily aimed at grades 8 to 10 of the grammar schools and comprehensive schools.

The lab’s topics are solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen technologies and energy.

In the school programmes of the Helmholtz Association’s Helmholtz-Network School-Labs, GEOMAR scientists provide schools with access to their research topics: in cooperation projects with schools, in project work by individual pupils, by providing materials for teaching and in special events.

GEOMAR school programmes (German)

In the youth campus at Kiel University of Applied Sciences (FH Kiel), employees and students help to discover lots about the UAS, its subject areas, degree programmes and institutions. For example, the offers include interesting and exciting workshops, presentations and research projects for school groups from grades 5 to 13.

Miniphänomenta discovery lab

Be amazed and research

The Miniphänomenta discovery lab is a venture of the Phenomenta in Flensburg and is present in various cities. In Kiel, it is supported by the Stadtwerke Kiel public utilities. They have been financing these services for schools annually since 2018:

  • a two-day training course for two teachers per school at the Tannenfelde education centre
  • a 14-day loan of the complete Miniphänomenta discovery lab at the school
  • one day of building ten Miniphänomenta discovery lab models with expert guidance (including materials)

The experimental stations then remain permanently at the respective school. The offer is primarily aimed at primary schools, but it is also very appropriate for fifth and sixth grades.

Best Practice

Some schools in Kiel successfully develop models to integrate science into everyday school life.

Primary schools are certified by the "Stiftung Kinder forschen" (Little Scientists Foundation) and inspired about researching and experimenting from a child’s perspective. Comprehensive schools become involved as "MINT schools" and grammar schools link school with university, in order to arouse curiosity about new subjects and make it easier for high school graduates to orientate themselves when choosing their degree programme.
