Life in Kiel
Leisure Time & Sports
There are cafés, pubs, bars, modern restaurants and trendy clubs with lots going on throughout the week. There is theatre, opera; there are cinemas and concerts, museums, galleries, botanical gardens. As many visitors to Kiel have discovered, this city offers an impressive array of leisure activities.
Festivals and events form an integral part of Kiel city life. The legendary Kieler Woche, held every year at the end of June, is the world’s biggest sailing event and Northern Europe’s largest summer festival, attracting around three million visitors each year. Various performances are put on over the summer as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.
One of Germany’s main venues for concerts, guest performances and sports events is the Sparkassen-Arena in Kiel. This is where THW Kiel, one of the world’s most successful handball clubs, plays its home matches. Kiel’s more than 200 sports clubs offer all kinds of popular sports.
Relax by the sea: the Baltic Sea beaches along the fjord provide ideal opportunities for bathing and sports, such as beach volleyball, rowing, canoeing, windsurfing, kiteboarding and, of course, sailing. The brand name KIEL.SAILING CITY has a good ring to it wherever you are in the world.
The Kiel fjord is the scene of numerous regattas every year, and not just during Kieler Woche. The Volvo Ocean Race and the iShares Cup stopped off in Kiel. Numerous European and World Championships have been held on the Kiel fjord, including the 1936 and 1972 Olympic sailing events.
In the marinas around the fjord – of which nine are located within the city area – there are more than 5,000 water and land moorings for yachts and dinghies. Kiel pays particular attention to its next generation of sailors: those with no experience of sailing can have a go, led by professional sailing trainers, in Camp 24/7, the only sailing project of its kind in Germany. Kiel University also offers sailing lessons as part of its university sports programme.
