Financial support for university studies is mainly provided by BAföG (student financial assistance). In addition, there are various scholarships provided by the state or by private foundations, which are mostly paid as a grant towards studying.
BAföG (student financial assistance)
In terms of the Federal Education and Training Assistance Act (BAföG), students are entitled to a loan to finance their university studies, if their parents have insufficient financial means.
Advice and information, including on additional grants in cases of hardship or for students with children (childcare allowance), is available from the Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein (student union). You can submit the BaföG application here, if you are currently studying or intend to study at a university in Kiel.
Scholarships from organisations for the promotion of young talent
There are 13 organisations for the promotion of young talent that are sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. These are foundations with a political, religious, societal or business orientation. In addition to above-average school and academic achievements, applicants must also demonstrate social, voluntary or societal involvement.
Information from the BMBF on state-financed foundations:
The Germany Scholarship is awarded by universities to promising students. Half is paid for by the federal government, and the other half is paid for by private sponsors, which must be acquired by the universities themselves. Kiel University takes part in the scholarship programme.
Scholarships from private foundations
In addition to the large organisations for the promotion of young talent, there are also smaller private foundations. These may support students who have chosen specific subjects, students with specific backgrounds/ethnicity, or students at a particular phase of their studies, e.g. advanced semesters or doctoral studies. Online databases are useful when searching for the right scholarship.
