Life in Kiel
The Land Capital Kiel is Schleswig-Holstein’s most important industrial and service centre. It is home to German government agencies, organisations and major service providers. At the same time, however, Kiel is a family-friendly city characterised by its great layout, its excellent transport links, its attractive living environment with lots of green spaces and sweeping Baltic Sea beaches, and its wide variety of cultural events.
Kiel lives with and from the sea. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the climate and marine research conducted here in this city by the sea, among many other disciplines, is internationally renowned.
The city also scores points with its expanding ports, its cruise terminals, its highly specialised navy and, of course, its world class water sports.
Sailors from all over the world know the capital city of Schleswig-Holstein by its brand name Kiel Sailing City. Kiel has the largest of all the German university sailing centres.
And not least, Kieler Woche is the world’s biggest and probably most famous sailing event as well as Northern Europe’s largest summer festival and makes a significant contribution to the maritime flair of this city.
